Kurt Wimmer's Equilibrium, an action thriller set in a dystopic future, is the biggest surprise of the year. With virtually no advertising, no big name stars, and armed with only a low budget, I expected nothing more than a so-so timewaster, and certainly not the inventive and thoughtful action thriller it turned out to be. The film is set in the near future after the thirld world war. The survivors, believing the ability to feel is what leads to violence, created a society that lacks emotion due to a drug called prozium, of which a daily dose is required for all citizens. Christian Bale stars as John Preston, a cleric whose duty is to hunt down rebels who oppose this order. But when he misses his own dosage, he experiences emotions for the first time, sparking within him a sympathy for the rebels and the desire to quell this emotion-less society.
Equilibrium is not without its flaws. The set-up is fairly derivative and the direction is sometimes a little ham-fisted. But the story is consistently compelling and suspenseful, even a little unpredictable. Christian Bale's performance is dramatically powerful and convincing (especially when it comes to the action scenes), atoning for whatever missteps the script may have taken. Watching him deal with his newfound emotions is fascinating where it might have been laughable in the hands of a lesser actor. The film's theme, that emotion is the key to what makes us human, is nothing novel, but it's a statement the movie strongly backs up and it's a nice reminder considering the times we live in.
What clearly stands out above all else (and the very reason this film will be have a strong cult following in the years to come) are the action sequences. The film introduces a method of fighting, called gun-kata, basically martial arts combat with bullets, which sets up for the most creative action scenes I've seen in years. I'll even go so far as to say that the climactic battle scene, complete with Bale taking on an entire arsenal with handguns; assault rifles; swords, and eventually concluding with a one-on-one gun-kata battle to the death, outdoes anything in The Matrix. It's a breathtaking, exhilarating finish to a rousing gem of a thriller.
Есть разгромные оценки от привередливых критиков. Но все-таки надо бы глянуть на эту "gun-kata"...
